April Allotment Tour Video

30/04/201821/09/2018 ~ Katrina ~ 2 Comments

Looking back, April has been one hell of strange month! We had a blanket of snow then just a week ago, around the time when I filmed this video, we had soaring temperatures of 27 degrees! None the less I have achieved so much on the plot and some big changes have taken place.

👉🏻You there, yes you! Make sure you get out today no matter how heavy it’s raining, or how strong the wind is blowing to cast your vote. ✊🏻This is the biggest and most important election of my lifetime and it’s an opportunity for change, an end to austerity and hope of a brighter future for us all. If you’re following me, chances are you are around my age or a bit younger. This election IS OUR futurebut statistically we’re the least likely to vote. They don’t want us to vote. They don’t think we’ll bother to turn up. It’s up to us to make the real change. Make your voice heard. Surprise them. VOTE! 🗳🌹 #imvotinglabour #votelabour #endausterity #forthemanynotthefew #saveournhs #votenhs #itsnotaboutbrexit #JC4PM #standtogether #equality
🌸These early winter evenings are perfect for crafty projects. I’m currently brightening my home with natural, handmade decorations including this everlasting strawflower bauble! It was so easy to make and will look pretty all year round. I grew the strawflowers (helichrysum) at work but they’ll definitely be on my plot next year! Take a look at my saved story highlight for tips on how to grow your flowers and make your own bauble! 🌸 . #abaubleforlifenotjustforchristmas #strawflowers #helichrysum #handmade #growyourownflowers #dryflowers #handmadedecorations #gardenersofinstagram #homegrown #dowhatyoulove #flowers #flowerbauble
Well I don’t think I’ve ever harvested chillies in December before! 😄 I’ve said it before, but the Sugar Rush Peach mixed here with the Aji pineapple have been SO prolific. They’re unstoppable! 🍑 Guess what? It won’t be too much longer until I’m sowing seeds for the 2020 chillies!! 👏🏻 🌶 Do you have any unusual varieties on your grow list? Let me know if you have a variety that I MUST try! You know I love my chillies 😉💌🌱 . #growyourown #chillies #allotment #gardening #allotmentlife #sugarrushpeach #homegrown #eatfresh #growwhatyoueat #gardenersofinstagram #allotmenteer #grownfromseed #organicallygrown
Happy Friday! I can’t believe it’s the weekend already. This week has absolutely flown by. Probably because I’ve had such fun at work making decorations, lighting up the estate and helping with some of the indoor decorations too! It’s got me feeling festive and this is only the start of a festive weekend which will involve wreath making with my friends, the first Christmas dinner and getting the tree up inside my own home! 🎄👏🏻 I’ve also got a crazy number of bulbs to plant on the allotment tomorrow but the weather looks promising. I hope you have a magical weekend ✨
Let me tell you a little about these spicy, sweet peppers and how I got the seeds to this unusual variety from Morocco. 🇲🇦 It was November time last year when I attended a talk by seed collector called Adam Alexander. He appeared on Gardeners’ World in 2018 and is a seed guardian for @heritageseedlibrary. Adam travels the world to collect old and localised varieties of vegetables to save them from being lost forever and helps to make them more widely available. The seed for this particular pepper was first collected in 1997 from a desert oasis in Eastern Morocco. It’s like a sweet pepper but it has packs a spicy punch! It’s a really interesting hot, sweet pepper variety and I’m grateful for the work that Adam does to protect plant heritage and open up a diverse range of foods for us to grow! You can find out more about Adam at veggingoutwithadam.com where you can even purchase some of the heritage varieties that he has saved. I love learning about their origins. It gives so much more meaning to the food that I feel fortunate to be able to grow.
It’s cold and yes it’s me with those carrots again! If you enjoy watching my allotment tour videos I have good news for you because my November vlog is ready to watch! 📽 So curl up with a cuppa and see what I got up to on the plot in November including how I lifted my dahlias, mulched the others, planted garlic and my amazement when I harvested *that* carrot! 🥕😵C’mon, you know where that link is!😉 👩🏻‍🌾 . #allotment #gardening #gardenblogger #growyourown #growwhatyoueat #eatfresh #homegrown #carrots #youtuber #vegetablegarden #organicgardening #allotmentlife #gardeninspiration #gardenersofinstagram #vegiepatch #greenfingers
On a miserable, grey day there’s nothing better than eating colourful, homegrown food! 🧡 These two carrots went straight into a casserole after I spent some time appreciating their intense colours! 😍 The Red Samurai even kept its red colour after cooking! 🥕👌🏻
I harvest a few of the first carrots and couldn’t believe my eyes when I pulled this from my carrot bed 😵 ITS AS LONG AS MY FLIPPIN’ FORARM! This 14-inch carrot is a gorgeous reddish colour and is a Japanese variety called ‘Red Samurai’ but the best news of all, it’s carrotfly damage free!! Hurrah. 💃🏻❤️
Do you even lift? 💪😏 The dahlias in my dry stone bed are up and ready to dry off before their winter slumber. 😴 The ones in here are my favourites and need a bit of a move around. This Wizard of Oz (my absolute FAV) is huge! I think I’ll be dividing this one in spring, something I did with my others and it worked fantastically well! Last year I lifted all of my dahlias, but I only had a few back then. I now have between 20 or 30 and it’s just too many for me to lift, store and have room for (and compost!) come spring when potting them up. So the long border has been mulched. It’s a bit of a risk, but if it all fails it’s an opportunity to try something new! 🌸 How’s your dahlia winter prep going? . #allotment #dahlias #growyourown #gardening #allotmentlife #autumngarden #dowhatyoulove #gardenersofinstagram #garden #organicgardening #homegrown #flowers
Look, a leek! It’s a biggie and my first ever homegrown leek. 😮 I’m not sure why I haven’t grown them before, maybe because I don’t use them that much in the kitchen. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I think I’m going to make a batch of leek and potato soup for the allotment tomorrow. I’m going to need it as the outlook isn’t great 🌧 but i don’t want to leave the dahlias any longer! Will you on the plot this weekend?
